Kathryn Jean (Packer) Rovey   ~  “Jean”

August 7, 1918 – November 5, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of Kathryn Jean Rovey announces her passing on November 5, 2016, age 98 at Cypress Health Region – The Meadows in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.  She is survived by her daughter, Donna Jean McCullough (Don), grandchildren Deborah Jean Price (Art), Darryl Michael McCullough (Kelly), Tiffany Lowe (Dave), Denton Brummund (Michelle) and great grandchildren Bradley and Shawn Price, Mikayla and Desmond Brummund, Isabella and Parnell Lowe and Kate McCullough.  She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore Ball Packer and Luella Packer, husband, Carl Albert Rovey, brother, Maynard Packer, and daughter Cheryl Rovey.  Jean was born on August 7, 1918 in Eston, Saskatchewan, where she was raised on the farm near Richlea and graduated from Eston High School in 1936.  Shortly after graduation she attended Woodbury University in Los Angeles in 1938, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design.  While in college her roommate, Ruth Rovey, Carl’s sister invited her to spend Christmas Holiday with her family in Arizona.  This is where Jean met future husband Carl Rovey and they married in fall of 1940.  Carl and Jean remained in Arizona on a dairy farm until 1944 when Jean’s parents asked them to help run the family farm in Canada.  They continued farming north of Richlea, Saskatchewan until 1975 at which time they began their retirement in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.  In the summer of 2013 Carl and Jean relocated to a retirement community in Swift Current, Saskatchewan until her passing.  Jean kept very active in both of the communities where she resided.  Some of her many accomplishments in Canada were acting as President of the Women’s Association of the United Church in Richlea.  She later served on committees of the Rosetown Presbytery of the United Church culminating with the chairmanship in the 1960’s.  During her service to the Church she organized and led many youth groups including Canadian Girls In Training, Mission Band and Explorers.  Additionally, she was a leader and director of the United Church camp located in Outlook for ten years.  Jean was a member of the order of Eastern Star Eston Chapter, Worthy Matron in 1954 and enjoyed the office of organist for many years.  She was a member of the Music Festival Committee and served as President for four years.  Applying her Interior Design degree, Jean worked for fifteen years with the Extension Division of the University of Saskatchewan where she travelled throughout the province teaching the fundamentals of Interior Design to Adult Education classes and was selected to judge homecraft work at 4-H Clubs.  Jean was chairman of the Eston Women’s Liberal Association for two years leading to the Chairmanship of the Women’s Liberal Association of Canada promoting women to take a more active role in civic and political affairs of their regions and country during the office term of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.  In Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Jean held an Elder role in the Community Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir and served as President of the Presbyterian Women’s group.  For twenty-one years Jean was an active member of PEO (Philanthropy Educational Organization) serving as President for two years in 2003-2005.  She was involved with the Child Enrichment Program for sixteen years at which time the Board honored her by creating an annual scholarship in her name to assist a family in need for one of the K-12 programs available through the Parks and Recreation Department.  Jean will be sadly missed by her family and friends and all the communities she touched.  As well as her extremely distinguished professional accomplishments, Jean was passionate about her family.  Her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren will always hold loving memories dear to their hearts.  Many of these memories include enjoying cookouts in the desert; eating her delicious cookies, jams and pies; picking strawberries; picking and shelling garden peas; many outfits all sewn with love and pride and all the nights of playing cards with her.  A service will be held in Jean’s honor at 2 p.m. on December 10th, 2016 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Eston.  Donations may be made in Kathryn’s memory to St. Andrew’s United Church, Eston, Saskatchewan.
