Muriel Eileen Hawkins nee Haakonson was born on August 27, 1942 at Dodsland, Saskatchewan. She passed away in Kerrobert on June 13, 2025 at the age of 82.
Muriel was the first and only daughter born to Melvin and Mildred Haakonson. Muriel lived in many places as a child but the family settled in Dewar Lake when she was in grade 7 and attended school there until grade 9. She rode the bus to Marengo for grades 10 through 12 and graduated in 1960.
On July 7, 1961 Muriel married Roger Hawkins of Hoosier. They lived on the family farm east of Hoosier and she became a farmer’s wife and a mum. Muriel and Roger lived on the farm for until 2008 and then traded houses with their son Gary and his family and moved 2 miles north. In 2019 they moved into a condo in Kindersley where they stayed until settling in the Pioneer Haven in Kerrobert.
Muriel lived by a few simple rules “do unto others” and “be kind”. She was a beautiful, giving, generous, helpful, funny, sweet person. She helped with any event in the community whether it be the writing of the history book or the cookbook, the Christmas concert, the many Buffalo BBQ’s, the care of the cemetery, production of the plays or reunions, her hands lent a hand. She always had time to visit or call a relative or friend – in fact before texting, their phone was most often busy.
The Eastern Star was very important to Muriel, she served as a member many years. Muriel was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Muriel and Roger spent many winters in Yuma, Arizona and had such fun with great friends. They took part in whatever was going on at the park and lent a hand there too! They enjoyed shuffling, golf, happy hour, cookouts and card games with their friends. Muriel took painting classes in Yuma and each of her children and grandchildren have pieces of her art.
The most important titles to Muriel were Wife, Mum, Grandma and Giji, Auntie and Friend. Muriel is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years Roger, daughter Lana and her husband Dave Braun. Their children Tanner and his wife Taylor, Callie and her partner Will McDonald and Carter. Also her son Dale and his children McKenna, her partner Cory Just and their children Mason and Mila and Morgan and her fiancé Randy Lawson, her son Gary and his wife Stacey and their children, Janelle and her son Hayden, Brent and his wife Jodi, Lane and his fiancé Nikita May and Wade.
She is also survived by her brother Vern, brothers and sisters in law, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Mil and Mel Haakonson, her brothers Larry and Roy and her daughter in law Carrie.
