MELVIN EDWIN MORRIS

November 16, 1923 – July 28, 2018 (AGE 94)

 

In loving memory of Melvin Morris who passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the Kerrobert Health Centre, at the age of 94 years.  

Melvin was born in the Kerrobert Union Hospital on November 16, 1923 son of Leslie & Grace (Norris) Morris. Melvin was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family farm 9 miles north of Dodsland. Melvin attended Toledo School, and then began working for several local farmers. Melvin joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November of 1942. After training, Melvin was stationed overseas in January of 1944, where he joined the RCAF Squadron 418 (City of Edmonton) as an air frame mechanic. During his time overseas Melvin was stationed at 11 different air bases, the last being in Holland at the end of the war.

Upon returning to Canada in January 1946 Melvin again returned to his love of farming and began to work for a local neighbour whose land he eventually rented and bought.

Melvin met Lucille Hjalte who was teaching at Toledo School, they were married on July 3, 1948 in Kerrobert. Mel & Lucille raised 5 children on their farm 15 miles east of Kerrobert.  Melvin expanded his farm including his father’s land. Melvin loved to fix and built things, kept his summer fallow black and was always willing to help a neighbour. Melvin was always involved in his kids’ activities and made many trips for hockey, basketball, boating, 4H, summer camps, to only name a few. Melvin belonged to the Dodsland Legion for many years. In 1990 Mel & Lucille bought a house in Kerrobert, SK where they retired. Melvin always kept his eye on the farm, he was always a valued helper whether it was operating equipment, driving for parts or just advice. Melvin always loved a crop tour. During his retirement Melvin became a valued helper at his son Darryl’s store (Kerrobert Reddi Mart) including shelf stocker, shelf & counter builder, handyman, pizza delivery guy. Melvin always enjoyed his visits with customers.

Melvin continued to live in his house in Kerrobert after the passing of his wife Lucille in June 2017, and just recently he had moved to Pioneer’s Haven in Kerrobert.

Melvin was predeased by his wife Lucille (2017), parents Leslie & Grace , brother Harold, sister Irene Wright, father & mother in law Alfred & Elizabeth Hjalte, brother in laws Arne Hjalte, Karl Hjalte, Albert Hjalte, Nels Yalte, Marvin Wright, Les Roberts, sister in laws Anna Hjalte, Shirley Hjalte, and Mary Morris and granddaughter in law Jaclyn Morris (Arthur).

 Melvin is loving remembered and missed by his children Darryl (Janice), Rae Robbie (Ken), Larry (Karolina), Warren (Connie) and Lori Morris (Richard Sproul).  10 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren, sister Velma Roberts and sister in law Margaret Yalte, cousins Eva Smith, Mervin Norris and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Service held for Melvin Morris on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 2:00 pm. at the Kerrobert United Church, Kerrobert with Marj Mack officiating. Interment will follow at the Kerrobert Cemetery.
