Jean Dahl Obituary

Our family is saddened to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Jean Dahl on March 24, 2025. Jean was born on the family farm near Eatonia on May 8, 1929 to parents Meredith and Elsie Jones. She grew up and attended Eaton School in Eatonia. In March of 1949, Jean married Elvin Dahl. They moved to the farm in Mantario and welcomed a daughter, Janis, in 1950, a son, Aron, in 1951, and a daughter, Diane, in 1954. Sadly, Diane passed away in 1956.  Another son, Eldon, was born in 1958. The family resided there until the fall of 1960, when they moved to Saskatoon. Jean took a secretarial course and worked as a bookkeeper for Merlin Motors, Bonli Interiors, and Bernie's Sports Centre. In 1976, Elvin and Jean moved from Saskatoon to a farm near Kindersley. A few years later, they purchased a home in town. Jean continued to reside in Kindersley after Elvin was diagnosed with cancer in 1979 and passed away in 1981. She was a member of the United Church in Eatonia and later St. Paul's United Church in Kindersley.

As a girl, Jean had enjoyed painting, and was continuously learning new skills, such as macramé, paper tole, and ceramics. She completed many projects, which continue to decorate both her own home and those of her family. She also lovingly knit many homemade sweaters. She will be remembered for decorating character birthday cakes and gingerbread houses, baking fruitcake at Christmas and for wedding favours, and hosting many family holiday gatherings. Jean also enjoyed reading, puzzles, league bowling, and travelling, whether she was making short trips to visit family or longer journeys to places such as California, Hawaii, Minneapolis, the Maritimes, England, Scotland, or Tel Aviv.

In 1996, Jean suffered a stroke, which affected her eyesight, but she soon returned to living independently. Her house continued to be a second home for her grandchildren, and Jean remained a constant source of guidance, support, and acceptance for them as they grew into adults. She was thrilled to have four great-grandchildren to love in her final years.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Janis Stepko of North Battleford, her son, Dr. Aron (Diane) Dahl of Calgary, and son, Eldon (Cheryl) Dahl of Kindersley, and her grandchildren, Rev. Karen Stepko, Steven Stepko, John Dahl and his children John and Max, Shallon Dahl, Richelle (Isaiah) Ortman and their children Margot and Iver, and James (Morgan) Dahl.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, Meredith and Elsie Jones, her husband, Elvin Dahl, her daughter, Diane Dahl, her son-in-law, Merven Stepko, her siblings: Margaret Paynter, Dorothy Sulz, Gordon Jones, and Brian Jones.

A funeral service will not be held. A private family burial at Eatonia Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation (details below).
