It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Arthur Vollans, who passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at the age of 89.
Jim is survived by his wife Alice; children Daryl Vollans, Dawn (Danny) Powell, Aaron (Holly) Vollans; grandchildren Norma and Dustin Bell, Cassidy and Casey Powell, Kaitlyn and Kennedy Vollans; great-grandchildren Keegan Ouimet and Keelee Bell, and Aniyah Vollans; sister Patricia Mann; brothers in law Lewis (Sheryl) Jones and Dean (Janet) Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Arthur and Mary Vollans; brothers George, David, and Alfred; and sisters Mary and Clara; parents-in-law William and Edna Jones and numerous other in-laws
James (Jim) was born in Dinsmore, SK December 9th, 1934, the 6th of 7 children. He lived on the Vollans farm south of Wiseton SK and attended Welcome Valley School, where he made many lifelong friends. The family moved to Westbank BC in 1946. In his teenage years, Jim enjoyed boxing, excelled in track and field, and had many daring adventures. In 1953, he and his brother Dave ventured back to Wiseton to farm the family land until 1961. This is when Jim met the love of his life, Alice Jones. After dating for 5 years, they married on June 25, 1962. They lived in Saskatoon for a short time, where Jim was employed as a milkman. Then he and Alice moved back to Wiseton, where he worked at the Coteau Co-op delivering fuel, etc for 11 years.
While living in numerous houses in Wiseton, Jim and Alice welcomed 3 children, Daryl in August 1963, Susan Dawn in August 1964, and Aaron in February 1967. The family trekked out west to the Okanagan in April of 1974, where Jim and Dave began construction. When the housing “boom” ended 8 months later, the family headed back to Wiseton where Jim started “Vollans and Sons Construction” and later worked for the Eston/Elrose school unit doing maintenance and construction. In 1991 Jim started working for the Village of Wiseton as the town maintenance man and garbage collector until 2005 and was also the town’s volunteer fire chief. Jim was an all-around, on-call, multi-skilled, handyman that many community members relied on.
In November 2017, Jim and Alice moved to Kindersley SK, to be closer to family, then in November 2018 Jim moved to the Heritage Manor, where he received excellent care that we could no longer give him and he remained there until his death.
Jim’s interests and activities included curling, golf, hockey, billiards, cards, games, camping, and watching many sports on TV. He also coached ball and taught gymnastics.
Jim was a talented musician. He built his own guitar and was self-taught in piano and guitar. Jim belonged to the church choir and musical group “Welcome Valley Express”, with whom he recorded a CD with. He was known for his bass voice. He was also the MC for Wiseton school Christmas concerts and served on the school board.
Jim had a vast knowledge of the Bible and filled in as preacher, occasionally. He was a member of the United Church for many years and in later years attended the Wiseton Pentecostal Church.
Jim had a fondness for dogs, and the birds in his yard and spent many hours tending to his trees and flowers.
Due to his advancing dementia we’ve been missing our Dad/Grandpa/Husband for many years now and we always will. His wisdom, strength, humour, and love will stay with us forever.
A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at the Clearview Community Church, Kindersley, SK on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 2 p.m. Rev. Kelly Froese will be officiating. Lunch will follow in the church hall.
