John Vernon Holmes
John Vernon Holmes passed away on June 17, 2019, at the age of 91 years.
Vernon was born to Alex and Florence Holmes on the farm at Marengo, SK on September 17, 1927. Vernon completed his schooling in Marengo and then attended the University of Saskatchewan, completing short courses in Agriculture.
He married Hattie Hedin on December 10, 1956.
Vernon is survived by his wife Hattie; three daughters, Brenda (Bruce), Beverly (Kevin), and Kerry Anne (Barry); five grandsons, Jason (Paloma), Jared (Jaclyn), Marc (Becky), Randall (Amanda) and Dean (Amanda); two granddaughters, Madison and Kayla; two great-grandsons, Marshall and Alex; and two great-granddaughters, Betty and Memphis.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Keith and Blake; sisters, Muriel Becker and Mona Faubert; sister-in-law Marg, and brothers-in-law, Charlie and Bob.
Vernon was a successful grain farmer and was proud of his accomplishments, especially his straight furrows. He was never happier than when in the field “going around in circles” as he would say. After retiring to Calgary, he continued to assist with seeding and harvesting every year until he was 89 years old. He enjoyed each and every day of it and had a lot of fun working alongside the grandsons.
An avid sports fan, Vernon played and coached hockey in Marengo and also played baseball in Flaxcombe. He was a quiet, generous, home-loving man, devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be dearly missed.
There will be a Funeral Service held for John on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Kindersley SK with Rev. Fr Emmanuel Azike as Celebrant.
