Mary Elizabeth (Glenn) LINN

In loving memory of MARY ELIZABETH LINN (GLENN) September 6, 1910 – September 26, 2017

Mary passed away on September 26, 2017 at Extendicare nursing home in Saskatoon at the age of 107.  She was the third of eight children born to James and Margaret Glenn (Warren) at Elstow, Saskatchewan as the family moved west from Bristol, Quebec.  The Glenns homesteaded at Snipe Lake before a move to Eston and in 1927 moved to a farm south of Flaxcombe.  In 1928 Mary started clerking at Al Stollsteimer’s Red & White store in Flaxcombe and continued until 1939.  She told many stories about her work at the store at a time when all orders were written out in hand and often filled late at night after the dance ended.  She told of men getting off the train during the Depression and coming to the store asking for food.  Al told her to give them what they asked for.  They never asked for money, only food.

Mary married Arthur David Linn on October 5, 1937 at the Glenn farm.  In 1939 they moved to Art’s farm where they lived until after their children were born when they moved to Art’s parents’ farm where there was all-season road and telephone access.  There were no services at Art’s farm and access in winter was by horse and sleigh.  Mary was active on the farm, feeding cows, harnessing horses and later driving a grain truck at harvest, all while looking after the children, house, garden, and cooking.  Mary curled, and she and Art loved to dance.

In the fall of 1980 they moved to an apartment at Dawn View Court in Kindersley.  Art passed away on December 1, 1980 and Mary continued to live in the apartment until 2006 when she moved to Caleb Manor, an assisted living home in Saskatoon.  It was a difficult time for her, leaving her own home and friends and moving from the Kindersley district where she had lived most of her life.  Mary’s 100th birthday party was celebrated at Caleb with her favourite band, the Jorgensons, playing so that she could dance, and dance she did, complaining that the dance ended too early.  Later as her health declined she moved to a private care home and spent the last five years at Extendicare.

Mary had a long and active life and saw many changes – telephones, radio, television, automobiles, electricity, two world wars, the Great Depression, the Dirty Thirties, airplanes and space travel to name a few.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, her seven siblings, Beryl, Mildred, Jean, Evelyn, Gordon, Douglas and Lewis, and their spouses, except for Pam Glenn (Douglas) who survives her, and her daughter-in-law Patricia Blacklock Linn.  She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces, daughter Marilyn Johnson (George) and their family Stacy Johnson (Cathy) and children Megan and Emily Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Sherri Radke (Edwin) and their children Everett, Nathan and Matthew Radke; son Dale Linn (Wendy Thorpe) and Dale’s sons Robert Linn (Erin Hiebert) and their daughter Catherine Linn, and Brian Linn (Michelle Fortin) and their children Anya and Broderick Linn.

The family thanks Dr. B. Larson and the staff at Extendicare for their kind and courteous care of Mary.

A memorial service will be held in St. Paul's United Church, Kindersley, SK  on Saturday, October 14th 2017 at 11:30 A.M. with Marj Mack officiating. interment of ashes will take place in the Kindersley Cemetery.
