Donald Hughes Ross

Don was born on August 19, 1927 to Ira and Mary Ross in the Alsask Hospital.  Don was the seventh of eight children.  He was initially raised on the family farm near Alsask.  Then the family moved into Alsask in 1940.  He farmed with his family and spent a few winters in Calgary during the 40’s and early 50’s working for the C.P.R. and a seismograph crew.  He was able to begin farming for himself in 1946 which became his life’s career and passion.  On December 28, 1956 Don married Doreen Mayer and over the next few years they built their first family home on the Ross family farm.  Their first child Melvin was born in November 1957.  Then four years later in November again, health twin boys arrived; Kevin and Jerry.  Another four years went by and in November a baby girl arrived; Michelle.  They raised their family on this farm until 1978, then moved to the Dow farm South of Alsask, where they still live to this day.

Don was an avid member of the Alsask Lions Club for 50 years and loved to be involved in community activities.  He played hockey with the Alsask Stampeders for many years and participated in 4-H with his children as well as coaching his boys in hockey.  He enjoyed working with the animals on his f

arm and enjoyed having a dog and cat (orange) tagging along while he did the chores.

Don is survived by his loving wife Doreen; children Melvin, Kevin (Sharon), Jerry (Jocelyn) and Michelle (Kevin); seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; sibling Margaret.  Don was predeceased by his parents Ira and Mary, siblings Lawrence, Marion, William, Raymond, Helen, and Norma.

Memorial tributes may be directed to the Cardiology Program through the Royal University Hospital Foundation, or to the Kindersley & District Health & Wellness Foundation.
