Alphonse Kohlman

Alphonse Kohlman was born July 2, 1932 in Cactus Lake, Saskatchewan.  He passed away peacefully with family and friends at his side on September 23, 2016, in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan.

Alphonse lived a full and rich life, the second oldest son of Alphonse and Floramina.  Dad had 14 brothers and sisters.  Alphonse married Clara Zerr on October 7, 1953 who in turn had 7 brothers and sisters.  Dad and Mom true to their roots had 11 children on their own.

Alphonse grew up on a farm and attended Barryville school where he walked barefoot, uphill both ways in both winter and summer. Dad passed his Grade 8, then left school to help his father and older brother Wendelin on the farm.  Alphonse loved farming and the independence that came with it.  When Dad was 16 he went with a crew from Cactus Lake and Compeer to Fort William/ Port Arthur (now known as Thunder Bay Ont.) to work unloading grain cars.  When the crew wasn’t working they were entertaining themselves by putting a cat in somebody’s lunch bucket.  Then, they stood back and “watched” when lunch time came.

After Alphonse and Clara were married they went farming south of Kerrobert on 480 acres.  Dad also worked during the summers at the PFRA pasture.  He had a good horse, named Smokey, that could lope all day.  Dad grew crops that he occasionally shared with the grasshoppers that passed through from time to time.

Kids started arriving with the oldest boy, Clifford born in 1954.  Family was important to Dad.   He worked side by side with Mom instilling their faith, work ethic, integrity, and perseverance in their children.

Dad and Mom farmed south of Kerrobert until 1963 when they sold it and bought a farm (800 acres) north of Kerrobert.  The land was better but required more perseverance to make it productive.

Dad was a multi-tasker working simultaneously at IPL Pipeline, rebuilding a farm and raising his family.  Dad encouraged his children in school, sports, 4-H, picking rocks, music, and reading.  Sundays were spent visiting relatives or in turn extending the hospitality to friends and family alike.  Alphonse enjoyed immensely the hustle and bustle of household activity.  Dad enjoyed good food, reading, travel, playing cards, collecting antiques, auction sales, wildlife, politics, music, and carpentry.

Dad eventually acquired enough land and kids to go farming full time.

Kids grew up, left home, but carried their memories and values with them.  The door was always open for anyone returning and in turn the hospitality was extended to their families and friends.

Dad lost a piece of himself when his soul mate and wife Clara succumbed to cancer in 2004.  Dad carried on as the “Good Lord” waited for the harvest.  Eventually the crop was ripe, pure, and ready as Dad slipped away peacefully into the hands of his Creator.  “I’m going home” Dad said.

Loving remembered by his children, Cliff (Mary), children, Justin (Leah), Riley (Amber) & their son Hunter, & Shantelle; Gary, children, Kody, Kory, & Katie; Allan (Edith), daughter, Katrina; Maryanne, children, Roz (Kevin), Sammi (Justin), & Lisa; Daughter-In-Law (Tracy), son, Jesse (Kyoko) and their children, Kaito, Rhea, & daughter, Jori (Neil); Dorothy (Peter), children, Katherine, Max, Georgina, & Sarah; Jacqueline (Ed), children, Maria, Nick, & Madeleine; Edwin (May), son, Kyle, daughter, Darby (Michael) and their son Zadyen,  son, Tyrell, daughter, Keara, &daughter, Alyssa; Keith (Ronda), children, Brant, Blayre, & Blake; & Kennedy (Shandy), children, Brandon, Tyler, Bianca, & Jasmine.

Circa 1980

Alphonse was predeceased by his wife, Clara; son, Michael; parents, Alphonse and Floramina; sisters, Madeline, Rose, and Faye; and his brothers, Edward, Andrew, Joe, and Wendelin.
